I’m Running for
City Council!

Greetings! I’m Meg Thornbury.

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and directly counsel people struggling in our systems as a mental health therapist. I work mostly with youth on Medicaid. I’m passionate about collaborating with and protecting minority groups with the belief that we need to treat all people like people. My priorities also include increasing housing stability and building community in order to improve and support Longmont, especially in Ward 2.

Why am I campaigning?

We’re in the bad timeline. We desperately need to build community to foster self-sufficient practices such as mutual aid and collaborative problem-solving. City Council also offers a strategic position against the rising tide of fascism in our country. I’m running because I believe that the most important thing to do right now to save democracy is getting active and building community at a local level. I’ll also bring my therapeutic advocacy and mediation skills to listen to Ward 2 residents and work with City Council to not only get Ward 2’s needs met but to build community along the way.

My Approaches and Priorities

Approaches:

I approach problems with active listening and direct collaboration with communities served - I believe that we can find shared values even if we disagree. I always prioritize treating all people like people and the power of building community. I will strive to democratically represent the interests of all of Ward 2.

“You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24.

I believe in grass roots campaigning and acting on behalf of the many and not the wealthy few. My campaign events will incorporate donations for the community (and will be designed around fun!)

Priorities:

Affordability - fighting for livable wages to keep up with the increasing cost of living, creating measures to increase affordable housing and decrease homelessness while also providing affordable health and mental health care. Seeing people struggle on the streets is harmful to everyone’s nervous system. I strongly believe we will all do better when people are housed.

Community Strengthening - communities should have the power to come together and advocate for their needs to maintain their community environment, including managing noise pollution from the airport.
